Bodies
Lauren Fournier defines the term autotheory, as “a self-conscious way of engaging with theory alongside lived experience and subjective embodiment” (Autotheory as Feminist Practice in Art, Writing, and Criticism. 2022).
My work takes the theory of feminist writers and historians such as Sara Ahmed, Melissa Febos and Silvia Federici, and combines it with my own experiences and memories to explore aspects of living in a female body in contemporary society. From health and diet, to ageing and shame, the aim of the work is to challenge conventional ideas about beauty and propriety.
The personal impact of the work is powerful and freeing.
This is an ongoing practice which I have begun to share through workshops, commissions and guest lectures. For more information on how to organise these, please get in touch.
